Elephant Seals

"Aņo Nuevo State Reserve is the site of the largest mainland breeding colony in the world for the northern elephant seal, and the interpretive program has attracted increasing interest every winter for the past 19 years. The males battle for mates on the beaches and the females give birth to their pups on the dunes." - Aņo Nuevo website

A hike to the beach and a guided tour of the Elephant Seal habitat. We will see and smell many adult seals and their pups.

  • 2:00 Tour departs from the trailhead
  • $5.00 fee per person, payable on the day of the event
  • $5.00 fee for vehicles, so plan to car pool with someone else

  • Directions: First, consult the map in the link above. Travel north on Highway 1 from Santa Cruz to the park entrance, a mile or so north of the border between Santa Cruz County and San Mateo County, about two thirds of the way to the intersection with Highway 84. If you get to Rossi Road or Pescadero Beach, you've gone too far.
